Working with paper mache . . .Build a Puppet
Students will learn how to create a special paper mache style of puppet that was first created in Chicago around 1940.  This hand puppet will become your child’s friend as each student creates a unique character. This is an art form that can then be put into motion for hours of fun and creativity! Cost is $45 / student (1-1/2 hour art class every Tuesday for 3 weeks)

Express yourself . . .Totem Sculpture
This class is a wonderful opportunity to focus on a personal emblem created as a sculpture …a “totem”.  Each participant will be guided through the design stage of “discovery”.  The result will be a “stick totem” that becomes an image of what is important to the artist and who they are.  This is so much fun that after you make one you just want to make more! Cost is $45 / student (1-1/2 hour art class every Tuesday for 3 weeks)

4th – 6th Grade   Saturday, April 7 – 21 from 1:00 – 2:30
Create with paper. . .Something Silhouette
Learn the special art form of “Silhouette”. This art form has always had a unique place in the art world, and yet few people take the time to explore silhouettes.  Each student will create an unusual and interesting landscape that has the dreamlike elements of a Surrealist painting.  This art opportunity has a strong emphasis on composition while also allowing each student’s creativity to stretch, bend and expand in new ways. Cost is $45 / student (1-1/2 hour art class every Tuesday for 3 weeks)

1st – 3rd Grade   Tuseday, April 10 – 24 from 5:30 – 7:00
Your favorite animal . . .Canned Critter
This class is a truly unique form of sculpture.  Each child will get to make their own animal form out of clay …but this is only the beginning of the fun! Each animal will be placed in a can with it’s own label.  For our younger artists this becomes an opportunity to promote their favorite pet as they learn some of the important elements of product labeling. Cost is $45 / student (1-1/2 hour art class every Tuesday for 3 weeks)

At the Smith Studio all art classes are taught by David Smith, an Illinois licensed art teacher.  For over 40 years David has taught at all levels, elementary though college.  He has held workshops in India, Singapore and Australia for Very Special Arts an organization to help people with disabilities.  David was recognized by the National Art Education Association as the 1994 “Illinois Art Educator of the Year”, the Illinois Art Education Association as the 2011 “Elementary Art Educator” and also in 2014 he was recognized as an IAEA Distinguished Member.

Smith Studio and Gallery art class area is on the main gallery floor and is set up with a child height sink, a wide variety of art materials, and even a drinking fountain.
We offer a wide range of 2-D and 3-D art classes and supply all the art materials needed to complete any given art activity.  We keep our class size small (maximum of 12 students) to create a fun and safe environment in which the students can learn, explore and share their ideas and experiences with others. His goal is to encourage your children to have fun being creative and learning that the “ARTS” can enrich their lives.
