Children Art Classes Grades 1–6
For Grades 1st thru 6th
Tuesday from 5:30 – 7:00 and
Saturday from 1:00 – 2:30
Cost: $45 / Student
Once a week for 3 weeks, 1-1/2 hours per class.
All art materials are included in the cost. Maximum 12 students to a class.
Payment is due when you sign-up for the art class.

Creating your own Cartoon Character
Learn the fun of creating unique cartoon characters. Students will expand their current abilities as they look at traditional cartooning techniques of proportion, positioning and perspective. Painting With Oil Pastels
In this class students will learn a painterly way to use oil pastels. This unique method of using oil pastels is a true “eye-opener” for anyone who discovers its’ special attributes. Invented in 1921, oil pastels (cray-pas) were designed with the purpose to open up a child’s creative mind. Crazy Hair Portraits
Starting with a profile portrait, skills are developed to create a sculptural and artistic pompadour in this truly unique art class. Engineering skills are taught as hairstyles become more challenging. This is a great class for students to learn how one design idea explodes into another …and that first ideas can be changed! Painting a Landscape. . .Your home on Mars.
This exciting class will challenge our students to think about what is needed for man to survive in the first human habitat on Mars. Participants will need to include the many colony components that allow for survival. Students will also learn how to layer their landscape painting to put the elements into perspective. Printmaking & Pop-Up Cards
Explore a variety of printing techniques that students can use to create a unique artwork. Learn how to create different types of printing plates; and how to use brayers, ink and other printing tools. Saturday Afternoon for Grades 4th – 6th November 4 – 18 FROM 1:00 – 2:30
This FUN and CREATIVE class starts with a wooden spoon. Clay is added to form a face on the spoon’s back. With paper sculpturing techniques a body is added. All of this leads to a creative sculpture of a character who has a personality unique to the maker. These in-the-round sculptures usually become cherished keepsakes. At the Smith Studio all art classes are taught by David Smith, an Illinois licensed art teacher. For over 40 years David has taught at all levels, elementary though college. He has held workshops in India, Singapore and Australia for Very Special Arts an organization to help people with disabilities. David was recognized by the National Art Education Association as the 1994 “Illinois Art Educator of the Year”, the Illinois Art Education Association as the 2011 “Elementary Art Educator” and also in 2014 he was recognized as an IAEA Distinguished Member.
Smith Studio and Gallery art class area is on the main gallery floor and is set up with a child height sink, a wide variety of art materials, and even a drinking fountain.
We offer a wide range of 2-D and 3-D art classes and supply all the art materials needed to complete any given art activity. We keep our class size small (maximum of 12 students) to create a fun and safe environment in which the students can learn, explore and share their ideas and experiences with others. His goal is to encourage your children to have fun being creative and learning that the “ARTS” can enrich their lives.
